Hola Muy buenas a tod@s:

I was recently hired by EK. I’m due to go to Dubai in a few weeks. That’s when my training starts. I see that there are a lot of people on here who want to join EK. It’s crazy. Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience right from the ning to help out all the hopefuls.

I’m from Canada. I applied last summer online. Not thinking anything of it. EK didn’t have any recruitment sessions in Canada until now. I got an email from a local recruitment company, inviting me to come to an open house. Again, I went there not really expecting anything. Just for fun. I’ve a full time job that I’m happy with here. I wore jeans, T shirt and sneakers. There were hundreds of people when I got there. At first I didn’t want to stay and wait for hours but then I decided to stay just to see what would happen. I waited about 3 hours before I was called in. I saw the recruiter for 2 minutes, she looked at me, asked me a couple of questions and asked me to come back the next day and wear a suit.

Next day I went back. This time there were only 30 people. They had us do some group exercises and watched us interact with one another. That took about 2 hours or so. In the end the recruited told us that we will all get an email from her. Some of us will get an invite to come and meet with EK recruiters who will be flying in from Dubai and some of us won’t.

One week later I got an email with an official invite, stating the day, time and place to go to.

So the day arrived. I wore dress shirt, tie but not a suit. I didn’t want to look like all the other boys and wanted to stand out.

When I got there I realized that there were 2 other groups beside mine, making the total number of people to be around 90. Predominately girls and about 30 boys. Everyone was all smiles and trying to be super talkative.

1. So we all go in. They showed us a video and told us a few things about life in Dubai. Some people were asking question after question and being funny. I guess this was their way of showing confidence.

2. After the initial intro we were asked to be in a few groups and asked to find out about the person to our left and stand up and tell everyone what you learned about that person. I stood up and forgot a couple of things the girl had told me about her. But I made the best of it. I spoke professionally to the point and clearly. Some people were trying to drag out the talk and be funny.
We were also called one by one to go and speak with the recruiter one on one as all of this was happening. They asked us if we were currently employed and do the height test.

Once this exercise was done we were all sent outside. We waited for about 20 minutes and we were called back in. Recruiters told us that some of us will be cut at this level and those who don’t make it through to the next level should not approach them for feedback.
We were all handed a folded piece of paper and sent outside. Only about 30 of us remained and the rest of the people got eliminated.
People seemed very upset and heartbroken. I got to stay!

3. We went in and had to do another exercise. It was about branding. We were divided into two groups. We were given a company name and we had to come up with 5 reasons why our company was better than the other group’s. We all took part. My strategy was to take charge, listen to the group, participate but not be negative and overbearing.
Once we were done, recruiters randomly asked us to stand up and talk about the company. I raised my hand, stood up and mentioned a few points. They would also ask whoever they wanted to ask to stand up and go into details. If you weren’t listening to the group then you were sh*t out of luck. So key was to listen and remember all the key points.

4. Now, it was time for second cut. We were sent out and called back in again last the last time. Handed a piece of paper. Many people got eliminated. People I thought were good and should have stayed. Now we were down to about 15 people. We all thought this was it. We got split into two groups again. Some more exercises and time for final cut. We got called in and, piece of paper, sent out outside and only 8 of us made it!

5. At this point we were given a personality test with 180 questions. Very simple. Just had to pick an option which best described us. No big deal. We signed personal information forms and wet up our one on one interviews within the next couple of days.

6. We all went in the next few days for our interviews, which were about an hour long. Many questions about previous jobs, experiences and why I wanted to be a cabin crew.

7. We were sent to have our photos taken as well and told that we would get a phone call within six weeks informing us of the outcome. I got my call within 2 weeks!! Now I just have to go through medical etc and head over to Dubai!!!

So, what are they looking for in a cabin crew?

Based on my personal experience these are my thoughts (they may come across harsh but it’s my opinion. Don’t take it personally):

1. You have to be good looking and well groomed. That is a must and your ticket to get in the door. Nice clean professional hair, good skin, great teeth and good smile. Clip your finger nails. Get a haircut. Girls don’t show too much skin. No dangly earrings and scarves around the neck. Hair nicely tied back and not too much makeup. Don’t bother applying for this position if you have acne. They want people who look healthy and people with acne can come across unhealthy. Also, people who are overweight won’t get through. Candidates with bad teeth, receding hairlines will have the same problem.

2. You have to be mature. Contrary to general belief that they want young people, they actually prefer mature, career driven people who have held customer service positions. Everyone they picked in my group was in their late 20’s to mid 30’s.

3. You have to be outspoken and have excellent communication s s. Don’t argue with someone just for the sake of arguing. Be helpful if you find someone is stuck. Don’t be overbearing, giddy, too cheery and crack jokes. They want serious, happy, helpful, career oriented people.

4. You must be able to speak proper English. It’s ok to have accents. But your grammar must be correct and a clear speech. You will be talking to passengers from all over the world and they need to be able to understand you. We didn’t have to do English test during our assessment as everyone who got picked had English as their first language.

5. You need to smile but only at appropriate times.

6. Sit up straight and show interest during the assessment.

7. Don’t ask too many questions. It shows that you didn’t do enough research about the company and you can come across annoying and not self sufficient.

8. Act responsible and mature. Don’t try to be friendly with the recruiters and ask them personal questions.

I hope this information was helpful. Let me know if you guys have any other questions for me.

Good luck!

ESTA NO ES MUY POSITIVA QUE DIGAMOS…..TIENE SU GRAN PARTE DE VERDAD. LO DEL PASSPORT ES VERDAD.

I went to work for Emirates in November 2007, and returned back to the UK in June of this year.
I must say it was one of the worst experiences in my life. Dubai as a country is horrible to live in – whatever you do, do NOT buy a car there. I made that mistake and was tricked into buying a car, and when it came to selling it, I lost nearly £4000. Dubai is full of tricksters so be careful.

If you want to open a bank account, it may take days, even WEEKS before a bank account is settled for new starters. Thats because you need some kind of proof and this is only given once you have completed training. You are given a cheque and you have to wait at the headquarters and that place is a nightmare (The Employee Service Centre)

The training is good – but hard work. However, if feels like your at school and are being told what to do. The temperature when I was doing training was 50 degrees – yet you got told off if you had your jacket off walking around the training school. The jacket had to be buttonned up – so you can imagine how hot it got.

The accomodation you live in varies – I was on Sheikh Zayed so there was no need for taxis. But I have heard of and knew friends that lived far out in the dessert and was secluded from everybody.

The flying is ok – although, having worked for a UK charter airline 4 years previous to Emirates, its VERY different. Theres NO such things as crew breaks – In the UK, by law, we must have a break every 4 hours for 30 minutes. This was non-existent at Emirates. You are CONSTANTLY working and answering call bells. Also, the passengers treat you like slaves. The rudeness and arrogance amongst some passengers is unbeliavable – if you can put up with this then Emirates is for you. But when you get ordered around by some passengers, you get no help from senior crew members because they are GOLD members of the Skywards scheme. You ARE going to do EXACTLY what they say and if not, then you get a report wrote about you, and sent to your manager.

Another thing that I was very shocked at, was on a flight to Pakistan. A gentleman, from the UK but of Pakistani origin was very rude and expected the crew to move ALL the meal carts from the aisle to get him some ice. He threw the drink all over me because I told him that he has to «bare with me one second.» I went to the Purser to let him know about this – I was told to apologise to the customer because he was a gold member. An absolute joke if you ask me!

When you leave Emirates, its as worst as starting there. For hours and hours you have to queue to get bits of paperwork and they hold your passport back. I was then told I would have to pay 3000 AED (roughly £500) and will get this back 8 weeks after my leaving date. 5 months on, I still havent received this money! No-one replies to my emails and it shows once you have left the company, they dont care!

If you can bare with these kind of things, then Emirates is for you. Yes, the glam is there in terms of the uniform and the places you go to. But, I can easily say, this WASNT for me.

If you have any questions about it, feel free to me a message!

Muchisimas gracias Boneteaereo 777

te lo has currado mucho, tio gracias!

Un saludo y te has ganado unas cerves!!! 🙂
